Shoreline erosion

Erosion of the lakefront around the south basin of Lake Winnipeg has been an issue for the last 40 years and during those 40 years the issue has not been dealt with satisfactorily by the community or the various levels of governments. Recent water levels of the lake and numerous fierce storms appear to have accelerated the rate of shoreline erosion since 2005. Following the “weather bomb” of October 2010 private property lines have been reached by the effects of erosion at almost all beaches around Lake Winnipeg. In the Municipality of Victoria Beach rising lake water levels have led to considerable flooding potential in areas of Albert Beach, Mike Bay, the VB clubhouse, the North Peninsula and Wanasing. Similar problems have arisen around the entire southern basin of Lake Winnipeg

There are a multitude of examples of ongoing shoreline erosion around the south basin of Lake Winnipeg. The weather bomb of October 2010 did a tremendous amount of damage to the beach areas. This event precipitated the need to create a long term shoreline erosion control policy in order to preserve Victoria Beach for future generations.

The science of erosion control is far from definitive. There is a vast amount of research available on the subject of erosion control but there is no conclusion that is readily available regarding the impact of various erosion control methods. The majority of research on erosion control involves ocean coastal environments. These environments are very different than large lakes such as Lake Winnipeg.
